14k gold price per gram

Fourteen karat is 14 parts gold in 24, so 58.3% of the weight is gold. It is the stamp on most of the gold in an American jewellery box, and the one people most often want priced.

$370.18 melt value, 4.5 grams of 14k gold

Spot gold $4,386.25 a troy ounce. LBMA benchmark set 11 September 2026.

What a buyer would actually pay

a pawn shop
$185.09 – $222.11
a local jeweller
$240.62 – $277.64
a cash-for-gold buyer
$203.60 – $259.13
a mail-in refiner
$296.14 – $314.65

Ranges are typical published trade spreads, not an offer. A buyer takes refining, assay and margin out of melt before paying you, so nobody pays spot. Troy ounces (31.1 g) are the metals ounce, not the 28.3 g ounce a kitchen scale shows.

What the 585 stamp means

A 14k piece carries 585, or 14K, or occasionally 583. The arithmetic is 14 divided by 24, which is 0.58333. Europe rounds that up to 585 and alloys a shade richer to make the stamp true; older American pieces round down to 583, which is the honest reading of the same ratio. The difference between the two is a third of one percent, worth pennies on a ring, and this site uses the lower figure on purpose. A melt estimate that comes in slightly under what you are offered is a good surprise. One that comes in over is the reason people feel cheated at the counter.

Fourteen karat became the American default because it sits at a genuinely useful point: enough gold for a warm yellow colour and good corrosion resistance, enough alloy to survive being worn every day. Nearly all US engagement rings, wedding bands and everyday chains are 14k, which is also why the used market for it is deep and why a jeweller is more likely to resell a 14k piece intact than melt it.

Colour comes from what makes up the other 41.7%. Copper heavy alloys give rose gold, silver and zinc give the standard yellow, and nickel or palladium with a rhodium plate give white gold. All three are the same 585 and all three are worth exactly the same at melt, whatever the piece looks like. White gold is not worth less because the plating has worn off, and rose gold is not worth more because it is fashionable.

A worked example: a 14k wedding band

Take a 14k wedding band weighing 4.5 grams. Multiply by 0.5833 to get 2.63 grams of pure gold, then multiply that by the gold price per gram. The melt value is $370.18.

That is the metal, not the offer. The same piece at a pawn shop is typically worth $185.09 to $222.11 (50% to 60% of melt), and at a mail-in refiner $296.14 to $314.65. The calculator at the top of the page shows all four kinds of buyer for whatever you enter.

Selling 14k gold

Fourteen karat is the purity where the gap between melt value and resale value is widest in ordinary jewellery, because so much of what is made in 14k is branded, designed or set with stones. A plain band is worth its melt and little more. The same weight as a signed designer piece, in its box, can be worth several times that to the right buyer, and sending it to a refiner destroys the difference permanently.

If the piece has stones, the weight you enter should be the metal only. A jeweller weighing a stone set ring will deduct an allowance for the stones before quoting, and a good one will show you the deduction. Diamonds and most coloured stones are far lighter than gold for their size, so the deduction is usually small, but on a cluster ring it is not.

The percentages above are typical published trade spreads rather than quotes. What buyers actually pay sets out where each band comes from, and how we calculate shows every constant used on this page.

14k gold questions

How much is 14k gold worth per gram today?

It is 58.3% of the gold spot price per gram, because that is how much of the weight is gold. The figure at the top of this page is calculated from the current London benchmark and updates when the benchmark does. A buyer will then pay you a share of that, typically 50% to 85% depending on who they are.

What does 585 mean on a ring?

585 parts gold per thousand, which is 58.5% and the European way of writing 14 karat. A 14K, 14KT or 583 stamp on an American piece means the same thing. It is a claim about purity only and says nothing about weight, brand or stones.

How much is a 14k gold ring worth?

Weigh it, subtract any stones, and multiply the gold weight by the 14k price per gram above. A plain band is usually 3 to 6 grams. That gives melt value, which is the floor. A branded or antique ring can be worth much more than melt and should be valued as jewellery, not as scrap.

Is 14k white gold worth the same as 14k yellow gold?

Yes, at melt. Both are 58.3% gold by weight and the refiner pays for the gold content. The white colour comes from nickel or palladium in the alloy and a rhodium plating on the surface, neither of which changes what the piece is worth as metal.
